ジョージ・オーウェルが見た1945年のドイツ

　今年は1945年から80年。ということで末期戦が盛り上がったのかな、とちょっと思うんですが、Banzaiマガジンからは「グデーリアン最後の賭け」が、VaeVictisからは「La bataille de Lauban - Opération Gemse 1945」が出ましたね。自分もブログでこんなこと書いていたなあ。「グデーリアン最後の賭け」(BANZAI 24) の自転車兵ユニットについて

　で、終戦の年のドイツをジョージ・オーウェルが新聞特派員として訪れていたってことを知って、彼の記事が集められた本『Ruins』を読んでみました。以前ブログにも書きましたけど、ジョージ・オーウェル好きなんですよね。『カタロニア賛歌』と『パリ・ロンドンどん底生活』、最高。

　オーウェルは1945年２月から６月まで、まずフランス、そしてドイツ、オーストリアと廻ったそうです。解放直後のフランスの状況など、いろいろと興味深い記事があって、フランスがド・ゴールのもとでまた大国としての地位を取り戻そうとしているところとか、ドイツ人がロシアに占領されるのを非常に恐れていたりとか。新聞記事だからか、結構短めの文章が集められていて読みやすかったです。本全体も100ページちょいしかないし。

　自分的に一番面白かったのはBavarian Peasants Ignore the Warっていう記事。4月21日、ニュルンベルクって日付がついているのでドイツ降伏の2週間半ほど前ですが、そのあたりのほとんどの住民はseem to regard the war as something already in the past and its continuation as a lunacy in which they have no part, and for which they need feel no responsibility.なんて書かれています。驚くほど、戦闘の真っ最中でも通常の村の生活が続けられていたそうで、The oxen still trudge slowly in front of the harrow while the guns echo from all the surrounding hillsides, and most of the peasants seem more afraid of being attacked by wandering Displaced Persons - freed foreign workers - than of being hit by a stray shell.だそうです。 

　米第12機甲師団の先遣部隊が通り過ぎたばかりの村では、Just outside the village a smashed road-block, a corpse or two, an abandoned tank and an orchard cratered by mortar shells, marked the spot where the Germans had tried to make a stand.と、光景が目に浮かんでくるような描写をしています。Immediately over the next hillside the self-propelled guns and heavy machine-guns had already opened fire on the next village and batches of miserably-dressed German prisoners, their hands locked behind their heads, were being brought in by bored soldiers with carbines.って、なんか映画のワンシーンにありそうですよね。でも、Amid all this the villagers were almost completely unconcerned.だそうです。マジかよ。

　まあほかのところでは、To walk through the ruined cities of Germany is to feel an actual doubt about the continuity of civilisation.って書いていて、このような戦禍を被ったのはドイツだけじゃない、ヨーロッパ全体だ、みたいなことを書いています。というか、そういった文明の危機やら政治状況の分析やらのほうが記事としては多かったかな。でもね、個人的にはオーウェルの具体的な場面の描写が好きなんですよね。

　この本の最後には"Revenge is Sour"っていうエッセイが収められていて、捕虜収容所を訪れた際にSSの士官がユダヤ人の職員に、まあなんていいますか蹴ったりしてひどい扱いを受けたのを目撃したことが書かれています。ユダヤ人がSSに憎しみを持っているのは当然だろうし、おそらくこのユダヤ人も家族全員が殺されたのだろう、ヒトラー政権がしたことに比べれば捕虜を蹴ることなど非常に小さなことだ、と書きつつ、But what this scene, and much else that I saw in Germany, brought home to me was that the whole idea of revenge and punishment is a childish daydream. Properly speaking, there is no such thing as revenge. Revenge is an act which you want to commit when you are powerless and because you are powerless: as soon as the sense of impotence is removed, the desire evaporates also.と述べています。単なる理想主義者ではなく、スペイン内戦に参加して前線で命をはった人物からこういうことを言われると、結構考えてしまいました。
